As a business that has a commitment to the environment, your health and your local community. We want to help reduce your reliance on global food systems and eat better fresher and all that without the problems associated with long food chains such as plastic, pesticides herbicides and all the other bad stuff associated (read our GMO Statement here). This means we want to provide everyone of all physical and economic means, the ability to grow as much food for themselves and their local community as possible and as such we have branched out to the wonderful world of gourmet mushrooms.

Our Microgreen and Sprouting business was founded on the principle of avoiding single-use plastics (among others), However, as a company that now also supplies home growers and urban farmers with the tools needed to cultivate their own gourmet mushrooms, we face a unique challenge: balancing our zero-plastic ethos with the practical needs of effective mushroom cultivation.

Mushroom grow bags are a critical component in the cultivation process, particularly for species that thrive under specific conditions of humidity, gas exchange, and contamination control. The bags we supply, with specialist filters, create an optimal microenvironment that supports robust mycelial growth and successful fruiting. These bags are essential for ensuring that growers—whether they're cultivating mushrooms on a small balcony, in an urban farm, or within a community garden—achieve reliable and healthy yields.

Why Single-Use?

The primary reason for the use of single-use grow bags lies in their efficacy in preventing contamination. Single-use bags provide a sterile, controlled environment, significantly reducing the risk of contamination compared to reusable options. This sterility is vital for beginners, small-scale growers and larger farms alike. There are low tec methods such as buckets and garden beds for oysters and wine caps, which we love and promote, however these methods aren't practical or consistent at higher production levels.

Despite the practical advantages of single-use grow bags, we are acutely aware of their environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainability compels us to continually seek out and invest in research for more sustainable alternatives. We are actively exploring options such as compostable materials and reusable solutions that can meet the stringent requirements of mushroom cultivation without compromising on sustainability.

Current Mitigations

  1. Recycling Programs: We encourage our customers to participate in local recycling programs to ensure that the plastic bags are disposed of responsibly. We provide guidance and resources on how to properly clean and recycle the bags after use along with the home composting of the spent mushroom blocks.

The truth is we haven't found any further adequate mitigations. However, after a lot of thought, many conversations with many different people we believe the benefits outweigh plastic. Here's why.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Despite the fact we are now, after a lot of consideration, selling single use plastic, we are still deeply committed to our core values of sustainability and environmental stewardship through urban farming, grow your own and short food chains. While the use of single-use grow bags presents a challenge, it is a necessary step in ensuring successful mushroom cultivation for our customers. However, this does not mean we are complacent. Our journey towards a more sustainable future involves several key initiatives:

Community Engagement

We actively engage with our community to promote sustainable practices and environmental consciousness. This includes hosting workshops, participating in local events, and partnering with environmental organizations to raise awareness and drive collective action towards a more sustainable future. We are certified organic by the Organic Farmers & Growers association, have active membership and collaboration with the landworkers alliance as well as UK Organic. All great organisations advancing regenerative, organic and local food movements.  

We also emphasize the benefits of growing your own food, including microgreens, which are easy to cultivate and packed with nutrients. We make supplies, seeds and equipment for growing microgreens along with a full and detailed curriculum and teachers aids available for schools who want them and are looking forward to doing the same with our gourmet mushrooms.  By integrating microgreens and soon to be mushrooms into school curriculums, we promote hands-on learning experiences that teach students about sustainability, nutrition, and the importance of local food systems.

Conclusion

Balancing our zero- single use plastic ethos with the practical needs of mushroom cultivation is a complex challenge that we face head-on at Grow Sow Greener. The use of single-use grow bags, while not ideal, is currently necessary to ensure the success and viability of mushroom growing for home and urban farmers.
