Unlike its cousins from the brassica family, broccoli, cauliflowers and cabbages, kohlrabi is grown for its above ground rosy swollen stem. An unusual looking plant with an unusual but pleasant flavour, it look great anywhere in the veg patch. We love it as it produces for the autumn, winter and early spring salads when other veg are harder to come by.

How to grow Organic Red Kohlrabi from seed

Sow thinly along a one to two centimetre grove you've made in the soil, one seed every six centimetres should do it. After around ten days thin seedlings to thirty centimetres. Kohlrabi are thirsty plants so water when dry and mulch well, grass clipping make a great slow release fertiliser whist reducing evaporation!

What to feed your Kohlrabi plants

Kohlrabi plants are very undemanding. They prefer free draining moist soil, loaded with plenty of organic matter to helps retain moisture which is more important than high nutrition to this crop. A good mix of rotten farmyard manure and fish, blood and bone meal with some volcanic rock dust and kelp powder gives them a rich, balanced and diverse diet for strong organic growth over the season. You can scatter an extra handful of blood fish and bone after a month of growing but probably isn't necessary. T

Keeping pests away

Kohlrabi suffers from the same pests as all brassicas, notably cabbage white however no where near as severely. Luckily Kohlrabi is relatively trouble free.

Grow Sow Greener is a regenerative gardening company advocating back to the roots tried and tested methods. We don’t recommend the use of or sell any extremely profitable but damaging pesticides, herbicides or inorganic fertilizers. They are detrimental to the health of your entire garden ecosystem, from microbe to mammal.

Encourage birds, hedgehogs and toads to take up residence instead, as they are all voracious predators of snails and slugs. Provide a water source as well as shelter and winter food for birds.
