Bag → Bulk: your quick-fire timeline
Day 0 – Inoculate
Work inside a still-air box or flow hood. Inject 2–5 ml of spore or liquid culture through the port, or slip in a couple of agar wedges.
Day 7–10 – First shake
When roughly a third of the grain looks white, break the bag up. This redistributes the mycelium and speeds the run.
Day 15–20 – Full colonisation
The grains should now be evenly snow-covered with no odd colours or smells.
Day 16–21 – Spawn to bulk
Open the bag, crumble the grain, and mix it with your chosen substrate. Ratios anywhere from 1 : 10 (standard) down to 1 : 2 (fast track) work well.
Day 30 onward – First flush
Timing depends on species and substrate, but expect pins about ten days after spawning.
Keep the bag (and later the substrate) at 20–25 °C; cooler rooms will lengthen each stage
Storage & shelf-life
-
Uninoculated: 4 months at <12 °C.
-
Inoculated: Use within 7 days of full colonisation for best vigour.
Quick FAQs
Can I keep a spare bag in the freezer?
No — ice crystals wreck grain texture. Cool, dark cupboard or fridge only.
Why rye over wheat or millet?
Higher protein, firm hulls, and a size that spreads evenly through bulk substrates — fewer “dead spots,” faster run.

Introducing Our Organic Sterilized Rye Grain for Gourmet Mushroom Cultivation
We're excited to offer our sterilized, organically certified rye grain, designed specifically for gourmet mushroom spawn production. Think of these grain bags as a nutrient-dense food source that the mycelium can quickly colonize within 15-20 days, making them an efficient step before spreading into the main substrate from which they continue to colonise and eventually fruit from.
Rye grain offers a well-rounded nutritional profile that supports vigorous mycelium colonization, leading to robust and healthy mushroom spawn and maintains a very nice level of hydration for your mycelium to grow.
Our organic certification guarantees that the rye grain is free from pesticides, fungicides, chemicals, and genetic modifications, which helps promote healthy mycelium growth and enhances mushroom yields. By selecting our sterilized organic rye grain, you're not only supporting sustainable agriculture but also providing an excellent growing medium for your gourmet mushrooms.
Sterilised Mushroom Grain Bags
Mushroom grain bags are specialized containers filled with sterilized grains, crucial for the intermediate phase of mushroom cultivation. To initiate the process, spores or mycelium introduced are injected into the bags through a port which automatically seals after the injection preventing any potential contaminants from entering.
Our mushroom grain bags also feature a 0.2-micron air filter, which allows your mycelium to breath whilst blocking airborne contaminants which could ruin you (and your mycelium's) day.
Additionally, if you have an agar plate with colonized mycelium, you can transfer it to the bag by carefully cutting the bag in a sterile environment, such as a laminar flow hood or still air box (SAB) before resealing the bag.
Once fully colonized and contaminate free, break up the grains before mixing them with your substrate of choice.
The quantity of spawn used in relation to the substrate, known as the spawn-to-substrate ratio, and can vary between 10% and 50%, depending on factors like mycelium growth rate, substrate nutritional content, and the cultivation technique used. We want you growing great mushrooms first and every time and always recommend a more than less approach to adding spawn.
All our grain bags are sterilized in autoclaves and infused with gypsum and calcium carbonate, which help in separating the grains post-colonization and supply essential calcium for strong mushroom development.
